The latest crime statistics for Brackenfell show that common robbery, business burglary, car theft and theft from cars climbed while violent crime remains low.

The fourth quarter crime statistics recently released indicates crime data between January and March.

With 29 cases business burglaries increased by 26% with six more reported cases than in the same quarter in the previous financial year. So did common robbery with a 71% increase from seven to 12 reported cases.

Twenty six cars were stolen, seven more than last year, showing a steady climb since 2021.

With a 67% increase, theft from cars top the list of crimes with the highest increase; 82 cases were reported between January and March.

Home burglaries decreased with five cases less than last year’s 67 cases, and house robberies remain steady with two incidents.

Violent crime levels continue to stay low with one murder case, no reported attempted murders, six assaults with the intent to do grievous bodily harm and three reported sexual offences.

Common assault decreased with 15 cases from last year’s 55 reported attacks.

Crimes detected as a result of police action is relatively low due to other law enforcement agencies being tasked to focus on it.

Three arrests were made for illegal possession of firearms, 12 for drug-related crimes and 13 for driving under the influence.

Station commander Col Jakobus Marthinus says the public becoming part of the crime solution by means of awareness is key.

“The hard reality is that crime has become part of our lives. No one is immune to the threat of the criminals,” he says.
