Protesters blocked Hindle Road with burning tyres.

The Public Order Police (PoP) and other law enforcement agencies are still on the scene in Hindle Road, between Mfluleni and Silversands after protests broke out this morning.

Protesters burned tyres and some protesters threw stones at passings vehicles.

A man who lives close the scene of the protest spoke to TygerBurger on condition of anonymity out of fear for retaliation. “My understanding is that shack dwellers in the area received notification that they should vacate the area because a shopping mall will be built in the area. I believe that today is the deadline for them to move and that is why they are protesting,” said the source.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg says PoP and other law enforcement agencies are monitoring the protest. “The road was blocked with burning tyres and stones. The road has since been reopened. Members will stay in the affected area to monitor the situation for any eventuality. No arrests have been made,” says Twigg.
