People walk alongside the canal in Blackheath where a man’s body was found.


  • A man drowned this morning in a canal at the corner of Range Road and Stellenbosch Arterial in the Blackheath Industrial area.
  • Police and fire and rescue divers recovered the body after he slipped and fell into the canal amidst flooded roads.
  • The police are seeking public assistance to identify the deceased.

The police have asked for the public’s help in identifying an unknown man who drowned this morning (11 July) around 07:00 in a canal at the corner of Range Road and Stellenbosch Arterial in the Blackheath Industrial area.

According to police spokesperson WO Joseph Swartbooi the man was walking on the pavement when he slipped and fell into the canal.

“At the time of the incident the roads were flooded. The police and fire and rescue divers were deployed to the area to search the area where the person was last seen by an eye witness upon which a searched ensued.

The body of an unknown man was retrieved from the water. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel,” says Swartbooi.

He says the Mfuleni police registered an inquest for further investigation.
