Police recover firearm stolen 10 years ago

Table View police chased down a suspicious man and found him in possession of a stolen firearm.

Table View police confiscated a firearm on Monday night (16 January) found to be stolen in Bothasig a decade ago.

According to a report, two quick-thinking officers managed to obtain the firearm after chasing a suspect down Parklands Main Road.

Police spokesperson Captain Adriana Chandler says shortly before 22:00 on Monday, Sergeant Jonathan Marthinus and Constable Masixole Baleni were conducting crime prevention patrols in Parklands Main Road, when they noticed a man acting suspicious.

She says when the man noticed police officers he ran away and the officers gave chase.

“Within a few seconds the man was apprehended and a firearm fell from the man’s possession. The firearm was secured and the unknown male could not provide the officers with a firearm licence. He was arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.”

Chandler says the serial number of the firearm was tested and it was confirmed as stolen in Bothasig during September 2006.

The suspect was then further charged with possession of a stolen firearm and will appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 19 January.
