Police are investigating the murder of a 32-year-old Chinese national who was shot and killed in Voortrekker Road, Townsend Estate.

The incident occurred at about 11:15 on Sunday 21 September, and the circumstances surrounding the murder remain unclear.

Goodwood police attended to the scene, where they found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds. Medical personnel declared him dead on the scene.

Police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg confirmed the incident. “Goodwood police registered a murder case for investigation following a shooting incident in Voortrekker Road, Townsend Estate, on Sunday night 21 September, at about 23:15, in which a 32-year-old Chinese national was shot and fatally wounded,” he said.

“The motive for the attack forms part of the police investigation and arrests are yet to be made.”

Abdallah Sydney, the chair of Goodwood Community Policing Forum (CPF), said that on behalf of the CPF, “we extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim. The matter remains under investigation by the police, and we trust that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.”

According to Sydney, Voortrekker Road has been identified as a hotspot for crime, and the police together with law enforcement have increased visible patrols in the area.

The CPF is working closely with the police, metro police, law enforcement, and local neighbourhood watches to improve safety. Weekly meetings are held to review crime patterns and plan coordinated responses. Neighbourhood watches play a critical role in early reporting, patrolling, and supporting the police with real-time information.

CPF engagement with residents

“We are encouraging residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activity immediately, and to participate in local safety initiatives such as neighbourhood watches and community safety forums. The CPF also shares safety alerts, crime awareness tips, and meeting opportunities to ensure the community remains informed and supported.

“We understand that this incident has caused great concern, but we want to reassure residents that safety interventions are being strengthened. By working together – the police, law enforcement, CPF structures, and the community – we can create a safer environment for all. We urge residents to remain united, cooperative, and proactive in reporting crime,” says Sydney.

Capt Frederick van Wyk, provincial police spokesperson, said the case is still under investigation and that no new developments can be reported at this stage.

Goodwood Police Station Commander Capt Shaun van Wyk added that the case is at a “very sensitive stage”.
