Following a second court appearance in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 2 May, a training instructor from the Philippi Police Training Academy accused of raping a female police trainee was released with a warning until the next hearing.
This was confirmed to TygerBurger by Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) spokesperson Phaladi Shuping, after the initial statement was released confirming the instructor’s arrest and detailing the incident that allegedly transpired on Sunday 31 March.
“It is alleged that on 31 March, a police instructor at a Philippi Police Training Academy in the Western Cape called a female police trainee to his office and she went to the office after she had several excuses in the past for not going to his office,” the statement read.
The 50-year-old police instructor is accused of having locked the door once the woman trainee entered his office, and raped her.
She was allowed to leave after the alleged rape, however did not report the incident immediately. The 30-year-old only reported the incident few days later and the case was reported to Ipid for investigations, the directorate continued.
Ipid arrested the police instructor on Sunday 21 April on a charge of rape.
He first appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Monday 22 April after which the case was postponed for a formal bail application. The Western Cape police was also approached to comment and spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg referred the inquiry back to Ipid.
