Police impersonator nabbed

A 30-year-old man who tried to use a Ravensmead police officer’s personal details to open a fraudulent account was caught in Malmesbury.

A 30-year-old man who tried to impersonate a Ravensmead police officer was arrested in Malmesbury yesterday (12 January) after he tried to open an account.

According to a report from provincial police, the man tried to open an account at a Malmesbury store using the  documents of a constable who is currently on leave.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk says one of the clerks was vigilant and noticed that the details on the man’s payslip did not correspond with that of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

“The police were called and the suspect was brought to the police station for questioning. Upon further investigation it came to light that the man was in fact not a police official and that the documentation that he carried was that of a police constable currently working at Ravensmead SAPS, who is on leave.”

Van Wyk says the suspect had in his possession an ID document with his photo on it, but which contained the details of the police official he was impersonating.

A case of fraud was opened and the man will appear in the Malmesbury Magistrate’s Court today (13 January).
