Visitors to the Canal Walk Shopping Centre were met with more than just the friendly smiles of sales assistants on Wednesday, when they witnessed angry screams and disgruntled faces of a small group of protestors inside the building.
The protestors, according to comments on social media, are apparently employers of a pharmacy in the centre and are demanding better salary increases.
A video that was posted on Facebook on Wednesday shows how members of the police’s PublicOrder Police Unit try to disperse the crowd with batons and shields.
Captain Frederick van Wyk, Western Cape police spokesperson, told TygerBurger four men – aged 31, 34, 36 and 41 – were arrested at the mall at about 14:00 and will be charged for contravening the regulation of a court interdict, public violence, malicious damage to property and assault.
They are due to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court.
