The sewer that runs into the canal on the Helderzight Road.

Families who live in Thornton next to the canal have been left with a rather stinky smell as sewage water ran into the canal.

According to Maryanne Jordaan and her husband, residents in Seeumeeu Road, he saw a big truck dumping something in the canal a while ago.

However, they were not sure what it was, but soon after that they had a terrible smell coming from the canal, which is basically in their backyard.

The residents also discovered a sewer that runs into the canal on the Helderzight Road. Emails have been sent to the Ward councillor Riad Davids, informing him about their predicament and how unbearable the smell is.

The City’s acting Mayco member for water and sanitation Siseko Mbandezi says the City’s water and sanitation directorate conducted an extensive investigation into this matter.

“Odours emanating from the canal were detected. All the stormwater lines along the canal were traced to establish the source of the smell as there were no visible sewer spills.”

The location of the source was later traced to a section where the sewer pipeline crossed through a stormwater manhole and was found to be leaking.

“A pipe repair team was immediately dispatched to contain the spillage and repair the pipeline. The stormwater system will be dosed with odour suppressants and bio-enzymes.”

According to Siseko, this work should be completed in approximately three days, depending on ground conditions.
