Councillor Angus McKenzie walking the park while equipment is burning.

The Bonteheuwel councillor says he is dismayed that nobody witnessed the destruction of a play park in broad daylight.

Angus McKenzie says he was called on Monday and informed that smoke is coming from the direction of a local play park. “On arrival I saw black smoke emanating from the direction of the park. On closer inspection I saw that some of the equipment was on fire. I immediately phoned the fire services,” says McKenzie.

After the fire was extinguished, they found that the equipment was burned beyond repair. “It broke my heart because the park was recently upgraded after the community requested it. This is a community that suffers greatly under gangsterism and needs to preserve things that is beneficial to the children. Now the good work is undone and do not know who did it.

“How can something like this happen in brought daylight and not one witness can come forward and tell us what happened? There are houses all around the park and not one person knows what happened. This troubling and it means that the people are on the side of those willing to break down this community,” says McKenzie.

He urged anyone with information on who was responsible for the fires to contact the police immediately.
