Gene Louw Primary opened its state-of-the-art turf cricket pitch – a significant first for this school – with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and two special matches on Saturday 1 March.

“This is a big day for Gene Louw,” said Golie Gouws, principal of the school.

“Installing a pitch is not a quick job and we have had to be patient. The base preparation started in October 2024 already, but it was all worth the wait. This is not only a facility to be proud of when we host matches, it also unlocks the opportunity for our players to develop their skills on a different level in the variety of conditions that a turf pitch can present. It will enable our teams to gain experience and prepare accordingly,” he said.

Guests of honour at the opening ceremony included past and present members of the Gene Louw Cricket Supporters’ Club; representatives of Six Gun Grill, one of their sponsors, as well as SA u-20 cricket player Ruan Terblanche, who captained the school’s u-13A team in 2014.

Once the pitch was officially declared open for play, two celebratory T20 matches were played between Gene Louw’s u-13A team and their counterparts from Vredekloof Primary and Paarl Boys’ Primary School.

About 700 young cricket players enjoyed an unforgettable morning of sporting fun at Gene Louw Primary’s annual Glengarry Mini-cricket Day on Saturyday 22 February.
