De Kuilen High School’s u-19A soccer team capped off a remarkable season with a 1–0 win over Sinenjongo High School from Milnerton in the Cape Peninsula Knockout League (CPKL) final on Wednesday 24 September.
The decisive goal, scored by Keelan Lategan, sealed a second CPKL title for the school’s first team – the first being in 2023 – and underscored the school’s growing reputation in school soccer.
The victory completed a historic treble for the side, having claimed three major titles this year.
In April, they won the Western Cape Super Soccer Schools (SSS) Tournament, where Logan Barlow was named Player of the Tournament.
The team went on to secure gold at the National SSS Tournament in Gqeberha in August, following the disqualification of their opponents. Captain Godwin Williams received Player of the Tournament honours.
Dedication
The team’s success has been credited to dedication, teamwork, and strong leadership from coaching and support staff, including coaches Grant Joshua and Wesley Gentry, principal Herman Mellet, Head of Soccer Fatima Duncan, u-19A team manager Jay-Lee Horne, sport organiser Gabri Spies, and the ongoing support of parents.
The school also celebrated the success of its u-14B team, who were crowned CPKL champions, highlighting the depth of talent and promising future of De Kuilen soccer.
Soccer was introduced at the school as recently as 2019.
After the disruption of school sports due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, Wesley Gentry coached six teams in 2021. The u-19 side claimed their first CPFL title in 2023 under then-captain Reece Baker.
“Through every challenge, the team stood united, playing with heart, skill, and faith — giving all the glory to God. This year has truly placed De Kuilen on the national schools’ soccer map, and we could not be prouder,” said team manager Jay-Lee Horne.
