Residents of Goodwood have voiced growing concerns regarding food trucks operating on the open field at 146 Vasco Boulevard, sparking debate in the community and online platforms—particularly the Eskom Se Push app.

What initially began as a welcomed local food market has since drawn criticism from some neighbours who say the trucks have become a disturbance. Reports suggest issues ranging from noise and traffic to questions around safety and long-term intentions for the site.

Initially, a permit was granted

According to the City of Cape Town, the organiser had initially applied for and was granted the necessary event permits.

“The organiser has applied for permits and was approved for the event they hosted over the last couple of weeks. The event organisers met all the requirements to be issued with a permit,” the City of Cape Town confirmed.

However, just weeks later, the City confirmed that the permit had been revoked.

“Due to challenges related to the location of the market, venue permission for the space was withdrawn. As a result, the associated event permit was subsequently revoked,” the City stated in response to enquiries.

Petition

“The decision has infuriated the event organiser, who has since taken to mobilising support on the Eskom Se Push app,” says another resident. “Organisers encouraged residents to sign a petition and email the City to overturn the decision, with relevant contact information shared widely on the app.

But the situation took an unsettling turn when, according to one resident, the organiser allegedly shared the personal details of those who complained on the app and made targeted, disparaging remarks—raising serious concerns about privacy and online harassment.

“The events organiser has bad-mouthed us publicly and specifically targeted me after sharing our details on a public platform,” the resident said.

By the time of publication, the events organiser had not responded to requests for comment.
