Chaos caused by reckless taxi drivers continue unabated in Kraaifontein, particularly on the very busy corner of Van Riebeeck Road and Ninth Avenue.

“They drive on the wrong side of the road into oncoming traffic to skip the queue and push other cars off the road to cross the intersection,” says concerned motorist Rendy Kruger who uses the road every day.

More dangerously, the taxi drivers give no head to red traffic lights.

Kruger says this has caused much friction between other motorists and taxi drivers who display an aggressive driving style.

“Every day I’m afraid that a violent clash of road rage will erupt between taxi drivers and motorists, she says.

Kruger herself has opted to drive a detour around Brackenfell Industria, adding many kilometres to her route each day to escape this chaos. Kruger has reported this to traffic and law enforcement authorities almost weekly since last year November, but says little has changed.

“At one point I took photos and phoned the traffic department every day, all to no avail. I receive SMSs from the City telling me the complaint is being attended to, but I don’t see anything getting better, its getting worse by the day,” she says.

“After contacting TygerBurger last year, I noted a traffic vehicle at the intersection only once, and never again,” she told TygerBurger last week.

“It is as if there is no law enforcement visibility at this busy intersection allowing the taxi drivers to continue with their lawlessness without any consequence. It is a desperate situation and needs to be addressed,” she says.

“If we as motorists cannot turn to the authorities whom we trust to enforce some kind of road rules, who then?”

The newspaper sent a media inquiry to the City requesting information on when law enforcement activities have taken place at this intersection and how the City plans to address the issue.

However, by the time of going to print, the City had not yet responded.
