The newly upgraded informal trading bays on Plattekloof Road in Bothasig are finally complete.

Work on the upgrade started about a month ago, and the project is now finalised.

In April, traders at the site said they were looking forward to the upgrade and that it will allow for more informal traders to trade, and more products to be sold (“Trading bays upgraded”, 10/4).

Asked about the completion of the trading bays, Ward councillor Miquette Temlett responded saying that informal trading in general, but specifically in Ward 5, provides significant benefits to both individuals and communities.

“It creates accessible opportunities for entrepreneurship and employment, allowing individuals with limited capital to generate income and support their families.

“This type of trading fosters economic inclusivity, as it enables marginalised groups, including women and youth, to engage in business activities.

“Additionally, informal trading stimulates local economies by keeping money within communities. Informal trading contributes to economic resilience and social cohesion, empowering communities to thrive despite broader economic challenges,” says Temlett.

In April informal trader Edward Amidu, who has been trading there for three years, told TygerBurger that all of the current traders at the site are happy that the bays are being improved and that they believe that business will increase as a result. There are currently 14 informal traders.

The original construction of the trading bays was completed in 2020.
