A brand-new retainer wall has been constructed at the athletic track at the Parow North Sports Ground in De Grendel Road, Parow. The wall suffered damage over time, says Roger Cannon, ward councillor.
Cannon said in a sit-down interview with TygerBurger on Friday last week that the athletic track needed a bit of upgrade, specifically the northern side at the retainer wall.
“We had water seeping down from the upper field and across the track, which was causing damage to the track itself. This meant that they had to do some repairs and upgrade to that side of the track specifically. They started, but as a result of the rains that we had, they could not work in the required time, but the deadline has been extended for them to finish the work, and they are almost done.
“Along with the retainer wall a ramp for wheelchairs and people with disabilities are also being built,” he says.
Cannon says the athletics track is over-used by the number of people who come to events. “Therefore, we have to make sure that it is in a good condition, so that it can accommodate the crowds that use the facilities.”
He says the work, which started at the end of June and which is done by a private contractor, are as a result of both over-usage and aging infrastructure. “Water however was the main factor, seeping down from the field higher up, through the retainer wall. That is why the wall had to be rebuilt,” he says.
Cannon conducted a site visit on Tuesday 14 October. He says the athletic season is in full swing.
