A total of 30 brand-new palm trees are being planted along Edgemead Drive in Edgemead as part of a Tree Replacement Initiative.

Miquette Temlett, Ward councillor, said last week that the replacements would be planted in the coming days, breathing life back into the areas where trees were sadly lost in recent months. Several trees had already been planted by Friday last week.

Edgemead is one of several Garden Cities in South Africa.

“The trees along Edgemead Drive have always been a beloved feature of the suburb’s character. Replacing them is not only about aesthetics, it is about restoring pride and resilience to our public spaces.

“I am incredibly thankful to the City of Cape Town’s recreation and parks department for prioritising this initiative, and I look forward to seeing our tree-lined avenue thrive once again,” Temlett said.

She added that residents located near planting sites will be encouraged to assist in caring for the newly planted trees, particularly with watering during the critical early establishment phase. This small act of community involvement, she said, plays a big role in ensuring their survival and long-term growth.

In 2022 the suburb was officially 50 years old. The area is also the home of Cape Town’s executive mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis.
