The memorial site where a Kraaifontein girl (8) lost her life in 2015 has been severely vandalised for a second time, this time by arsonists.
The family of Nadia Bond, who was killed by an alleged drunk driver in 9th Avenue in Belmont Park, say they received calls on Christmas Day saying the site where they had erected a small Christmas tree and placed flowers, had been set on fire.
Nadia’s father, John Bond, says while the court case has been ongoing, this was the second time the site had been vandalised.
“The first time the flowers put at the stop sign had been removed and thrown all over. This time at about 04:00 on Christmas Day it was set on fire. When we arrived just after 07:00 you could still see it smouldering. It was obvious that oil had also been used.”
Nadia (8) was knocked over by Bradley Gysman (19) at the site on 18 September 2015, while crossing the road when walking to a friend’s house.
She suffered a broken neck, extensive brain damage and internal bleeding. She was taken to the Kraaifontein Day Hospital, but later transferred to the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, where she died the next day.
On Thursday, neighbours and supporters of the family gathered to fix the memorial by removing all the burnt items and placing new flowers in Nadia’s memory.
“Who would do a thing like this? It’s inhumane,” one supporter was heard saying.
