Motorists travelling along the N1 highway can expect a range of lane closures and speed restrictions amid ongoing roadworks. According to Byron la Hoe, spokesperson for the provincial transport department, this is part of the department’s project to extend the third lane on the N1 from west of Durban Road to beyond the Old Oak Interchange. The temporary lane closures will be implemented during specific times from today (Monday 30 January) until Saturday 4 February.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and ask motorists for their patience in the interest of providing better, safer roads for all,” he says.
According to an alert issued by the contractor, a general speed restriction of 60km will be applicable for the duration of the road works.
The closures are as follows:
N1 Outbound
- Durban Road Interchange to Old Oak Interchange – permanent shoulder closure. Slow lane closure (08:00 – 15:00).
- Excavations next to abutment of Lincoln overpass bridge between Jip de Jager and Durban road – no closure.
- Old Oak Interchange to Okavango interchange just after R300 off-ramp – Fast lane shoulder closure (08:00 – 15:00).
- Minor operations on the side of the road (08:00 – 18:00).
- Jip de Jager Interchange to Durban Road Interchange – permanent fast lane median shoulder closure.
N1 Inbound:
- Durban Road interchange to Jip de Jager Interchange – permanent median shoulder closure. Fast lane closure (09:00 -18:00).
- R300 on-ramp to N1– permanent shoulder closure.
- Excavations next to abutment of Lincoln overpass bridge between Durban road and Jip de Jager – no closure.
- Okavango Interchange to Old Oak Interchange just after R300 off-ramp – permanent fast lane shoulder closure.
- Old Oak Interchange to Durban Road Interchange after Bill Bezuidenhout Bridge – excavations on side of road, no closure.
- Minor operations on the side of the road (08:00 – 18:00).
Interchanges:
- Jip de Jager shoulder closures on On/Off-Ramps (9:00 – 15:00).
- Mike Pienaar Avenue (Southbound) – median shoulder closure (09:00-15:00).
- Jip de Jager Avenue (Northbound) – Slow lane closures (09:00 – 15:00).
- Durban Road Interchange Outbound Off-Ramp left-hand side, permanent shoulder closure.
- Durban Road Inbound On-Ramp permanent fast lane closure.
- Old Oak Inbound On-Ramp approach – permanent slow lane closure.
- Old Oak Inbound On-Ramp – permanent slow lane closure.
- Old Oak Outbound Off-Ramp lane closures (left-hand and right hand sides, 09:00 – 15:00).
Underpass:
Carl Cronje Drive – Slow lane closure and fast lane closure. Closures will be set up on Carl Cronje Drive underpass from 08:00 to 20:00.
