As cases of theft out of motor vehicles and hi-jackings spike in Table View and surrounds, the police are appealing to the public to exercise caution.
Table View police spokesperson Capt Adriana Chandler says residents should remove valuable items from their vehicle when parking.
“Park your vehicle inside your property where possible, and activate the alarm. Make sure all your doors are locked before walking away from your car (even if just for a few minutes). Also activate your car alarm when it is parked,” she says.
Resident Tanya Lovemore says her car was broken into while parked at Sunset Beach.
“Not much was stolen because I had my handbag with me, but my window was smashed and my car inside was left in a state,” she says.
She warns other motorists to rather park their car where it is visible to others.
“I had to replace my window. Next time, I will rather go to Bloubergstrand beach where everyone can see my car,” she says.
Chandler gave the following tips to all motorists:
- When driving, make sure all your doors are locked.
- When returning home, reverse your vehicle into the drive way so that you can have a clear view of the entrance, and can make a quick getaway, should someone enter your property.
- When suspecting that someone might be following you, drive to your nearest police station and report your suspicion.
- When stationary at an intersection, make sure your doors are locked, and windows closed.
- Give responsibly, by donating to the various NGO’s and churches in your community, who will make sure destitute people will receive your donation.
- Do not wind your window down at an intersection to anyone suspicious approaching your vehicle.
- Always be alert and aware of your surroundings, when driving.
