Members of the Monte Vista Plattekloof Glen Neighbourhood Watch and other local organisations and companies paid their final respects to a former patroller who passed away recently.
Lloyd de Beer (67), a former patroller, was described as an “active member” by his former fellow patrol members.
On Sunday 5 May the neighbourhood watch, as well as other organisations such as the Monte Vista Plattekloof Glen Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association, Swart Security, Fidelity ADT, District Watch, and the private ambulance service SecureMed commemorated De Beer with a convoy drive through Monte Vista.
Carol de Beer, the widow, says the gesture by the organisations and companies was “amazing”. She thanked all of the organisations and companies, as well as the immediate neighbours for the amazing and memorable experience which she says she will hold in her heart forever.
Her husband died on Thursday 2 May due to a cardiac arrest. She said it was all so sudden.
Deon Oosthuizen, vice-chair of the neighbourhood watch, said though he did not know De Beer personally, and only met him a few times at the annual general meetings, De Beer was an active member of the organisation.
“He always reported any suspicious behaviour, and had a favourite route that he took, the same route we drove on his memorial as a symbolic last patrol,” Oosthuizen said.
De Beer joined the neighbourhood watch on 10 March 2020. “Since joining he had done a total of 210 patrols, over 542 kilometres and a total of 328 hours,” Oosthuizen said.
He adds: “It is a great loss to the neighbourhood watch to lose such an active member in the community. Leone Pretorius, our secretary, did a great job in organising and planning the memorial drive to say our final goodbye.”
