Thousands of youth have made use of the opportunity to learn more about career and employment training offered by a variety of Setas and colleges as part of the Mitchells Plain Community Advice and Development Project’s third annual career expo.

Youth co-ordinator for the advice office, Gadija Satarien, says the turn out was good for this event, held at Westridge Civic Centre on Thursday 9 May.

“We work in Mitchells Plain and we find that a lot of our young people are sitting around not doing anything. But, this is also because they are misinformed and don’t know about the opportunities that are available, so we do this so that they can see what is available to them, hopefully encouraging them,” she says.

She continues that several success stories have come from these expo’s, with a group of 60 people graduating from one of the colleges last year. There have also been several artisans who have completed their apprenticeships, she adds.

Legal Aid, Women Arise and the Independent Electoral Commission also joined the event to provide information and encouragement to the youth in attendance. Local health and wellness department social workers and clinic representatives also spoke frankly about family planning and reproductive health.
