Mitchell’s Plain police have seized seven guns in two days.
On Sunday (6 July) police conducted two raids, one in Beacon Valley and another in Portlands, in which three firearms and ammunition were recovered, according to Mitchells Plain Police Station commander Brig Brian Muller. Yesterday (7 July) heightened visibility and targeted policing in Tafelsig yielded four more weapons and ammunition.
“These seizures emanate from bolstered deployments to prevent further occurrences of gang violence,” said Western Cape police spokesperson Lt-Col Malcolm Pojie.
He described Monday’s seizure as being the result of a patrol in Du Toitskloof Street, Tafelsig. Officers caught a man who had fled into a drug outlet with what looked like a parcel of drugs. However, a search of the premises yielded three Glock 9 mm pistols and a CZ pistol, some without serial numbers, and ammunition concealed in a transparent bag in the roof of the house.
“Members arrested the 28-year-old suspect who faces charges related to the illegal possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition,” Pojie said. “He is scheduled to appear in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrates’ Court once charged.” There was no indication of any other charges added.
