Mitchell’s Plain police say the area is calm after the spate of shootings that claimed the lives of at least six people last week.
Station commander Brig Brian Muller said he was “on the ground” with forces on Sunday 6 July and three guns and ammunition were recovered during arrests. Two were recovered in Beacon Valley, where the majority of the shootings occurred last week, and one in Portland.
Lieut Col Malcolm Pojie, commander of the Provincial Media Centre, did not confirm how many people were killed but said “reinforcements and specialised units had been deployed in affected areas where gang violence erupted the last week”.
He said that they would remain in the area until calm was restored.
“We appeal to members of the public who may have any information regarding gang violence or planned gang activities to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or the MySAPS mobile application, anonymously.”
Lentegeur Community Police Forum chair, Michael Jacobs, saidyesterday (Monday 8 July) the mood in Mitchell’s Plain was quiet “but still tense”.
