The Subcouncil 3 meeting held on Thursday last week at the Milnerton Municipal Offices was started off with a moment of silence for the three victims of a house fire in Joe Slovo Park, Milnerton, the weekend before.

Phindile Maxiti, Subcouncil chair, extended his condolences to the families of the three fire victims. “Our thoughts and prayers are with these family members,” he says. It is not clear as to what caused the fire.

In his chair’s report, Maxiti highlighted the dangers of illegal electrical connections in Joe Slovo Park.

He says he wants to call upon the residents in the area to stop illegal connections.

He is not implying that the recent fire was caused by illegal connections, however illegal connections do play a huge part when it comes to shack fires, he says.

He is pleading with the residents to stop with illegal connections for the safety off all and says the City of Cape Town will look at ways of providing the informal structures with electricity as a commitment was made by the electricity department in August this year.

Do not to disrupt services

Maxiti also mentioned in his report that councillors should encourage residents in their wards not to disrupt the work carried out by the City or its contractors. He called upon community leaders to work together with the City around the roadworks currently being done in Dunoon specifically.

The project started on Monday 18 September and runs up until Tuesday 17 October.

Maxiti says he wants to ask the leaders in the area to protect the contractor and City’s staff that is working on the project.

“Several reports were received of contractors, officials being robbed, and their lives being in danger.

“It is simply impossible for the police to police everything and therefore I am asking the community leaders to work with the City to see projects being implemented for the benefits of their communities.”

Any issues concerning projects or any concerns must be sent to the Subcouncil as its door is always open, instead of residents burning the roads and damaging infrastructure, says Maxiti.

“These projects are there to better the lives of the communities,” he says.

The next meeting takes place on Thursday 19 October.
