The Metro Police officer who was shot in Hanover Park on Thursday (12 January) is recovering after undergoing surgery.
The officer was injured after a man opened fire on him while the shot Constable, along with his partner, were attending to a complaint.
Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, says the officer is awake and the operation went well. The officer was shot in the left side of his stomach and had a flesh wound on his right hand.
On Thursday night the City issued a statement indicating that an 18-year-old man had handed himself over following a manhunt by Metro Police and police. The man was arrested and will appear in court soon.
“This arrest sends a strong message that we will not tolerate attacks on our staff and that we will hunt you down. I commend everyone involved in the search for this suspect who was effectively forced to come forward as a result of sustained pressure. Now we must allow the law to take its course and allow the police and NPA to finalise the case and secure a conviction,” says Smith.
