Melkbosstrand High School is reeling from heartbreak after the sudden loss of both its principal and a beloved learner, just days apart. What should have been an ordinary school week turned into a time of profound sorrow as the tight-knit school community was shaken by the passing of two cherished members — a respected leader and a promising young life. Their absence has left a deep void in the corridors and hearts of everyone who knew them.
Late principal Daneil Ross (63) died of a heart attack last Wednesday, the School Governing Body (SGB) chair, Anthony Benadie, confirmed.
“Mr Ross led Melkbosstrand High School since its inception and served the school with dedication and distinction. We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends and the wider community.
“He will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace.”
Ross began to feel unwell in the early hours, drove himself to the hospital and died a few hours later.
Benadie confirmed he had received the news about 08:30 that morning.
Kenako
Grade 9 learner Kenako Boikanyo died last Friday. The school could not confirm the cause of death. She was a multi-talented learner who excelled in academics, sports and the arts. During her last tour she was chosen to be part of a select team from different schools in the country to tour internationally.
The school community has been profoundly affected by these losses. In a heartfelt tribute posted on the school’s Facebook page, the administration expressed their condolences and shared memories of both individuals.
“Her kindness, strength and unwavering presence left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
“While words cannot fully express the depths of our loss, we take comfort in the cherished memories and the legacy she leaves behind. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
As the school navigates this challenging time support services have been made available to students and staff. Counsellors are on hand to provide assistance, and the community is encouraged to come together in remembrance and support.”
A memorial service for Ross will be held on Thursday 17 April at 13:00.
“The school will close at 12:30 and the service will commence at 13:00. Due to limited seating (400 seats), Grade 11 and 12 learners, parents and staff will attend the service at the Dutch Reformed church in Melkbosstrand. Grade 8, 9 and 10 learners, along with parents, can view a live stream in the school hall.
“Learners attending the service must leave their bags at school and collect them afterwards.”
