A man who allegedly murdered a man along the railway line between Brooklyn and Maitland was arrested over the weekend.
According to a report from Maitland police, the area along the railway line is home to several squatters and is considered a crime hotspot.
Police spokesperson Constable Lorencial Johnson says on Friday 13 January at about 19:15, officers responded to a report about a stabbing.
“Upon arrival on the scene, it was discovered that a man was stabbed with a sharp object. It is alleged that the victim had an argument with a group of unknown men after which the stabbing took place. The victim was declared dead on the scene by paramedics.”
Johnson says officers set out to determine what had happened and find the motive for the attack. The investigation led them to a suspect with bloodstained clothes in his possession after statements were obtained from eyewitnesses.
A knife, covered in blood, was found in a bin the next day and is believed to be the murder weapon. The knife has now been sent for forensic tests.
