A distraught Yolandi Maggott from Brackenfell tells TygerBurger that her stepson, Darren Maggott (24), was murdered in cold blood on Thursday 10 May in Plattekloof.

“Darren was just peacefully sitting in his white Nissan Sentra when he was shot nine times,” says Maggott.

IPID spokesperson Moses Dlamini has confirmed that the police officer involved is from the Flying Squad Maitland.

According to Dlamini, Darren was allegedly wanted for a business robbery.

He says when police arrived on the scene, Darren was in his stationary vehicle. The police alleged that he reached for a firearm and they shot him nine times.

“Darren died on the scene and the body is currently at Tygerberg mortuary and was identified by his family,” says Dlamini.

Maggott says Darren was not a threat to anyone, he was just a suspect.

“I know from experience and knowledge that police officers are not allowed to just shoot, unless their lives are in danger,” she tells TygerBurger.

“Why nine shots? Why was he not called on the PA system to leave his vehicle? Why was there no warning shot fired?” she adds.

Dlamini has confirmed that the IPID is investigating the matter.

“Our investigators attended the postmortem and the investigation is ongoing. No arrest has been made,” says Dlamini.
