The homes and businesses of two men in Bellville and Melkbosstrand respectively were raided by the Hawks yesterday (Thursday 24 November).
According to Hawks spokesperson, Captain Lloyd Ramovha, the duo aged 53 and 48 will appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court today for allegedly defrauding the South African Revenue Services (SARS) of millions in an input VAT scam.
He says four addresses which comprise one business property and one residential property in both Bellville and Melkbosstrand were raided by the Commercial Crime Unit on Thursday morning.
“Documentary evidence and electronic equipment were seized. Corporate entities apparently run by the accused are also forming part of the probe as they allegedly benefited from the pair’s alleged unlawful exploits since 2002, in contravention of the Tax Administration Act. SARS reportedly suffered a loss of over R100 million from these unlawful activities.”
The men will now face charges relating to fraud, theft, money laundering, forgery and uttering.
