A local athlete from Monte Vista won gold medals at a powerlifting competition recently held in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
Simon Augustyn, who has been powerlifting from a young age, competed in the Master Male division for contestants between 40 and 44 years old and for people in the 90kg weight class.
He took part in two competitions – the 2025 Strict Arm Curl and Freestanding Curl World Championship as well as the WPC World Powerlifting Championships 2025.
“It was my first year of competing in strength events,” he said.
Augustyn won gold and walked away as the Masters overall winner in Strict Arm Curl and Freestanding Curl.
As a Masters athlete he took part in the Open Class, competing against younger and older lifters, he said. Here he managed to obtain second place in the Strict Arm Curl and Freestanding Curl competitions.
In the WPC World Powerlifting Championships event, he weighed in at 86,8kg.
Augustyn started training weights at the age of 16. He is also the owner of the private gym, Fitmotion.
