The Mitchells Plain Regional Court convicted and sentenced Yusuf Parker (29) to life imprisonment for the murder of Lorenzo Ely on Wednesday 6 November.
Reports reveal that on Wednesday 20 March 2019 at 15:00 the victim was with friends at a tuckshop in AZ Berman Drive, Lentegeur when a Toyota stopped and two suspects jumped out and randomly fired shots at the deceased and other victims, Michael Smith and Bradley Solomons. They tried to run away from the suspects but they were followed until Lorenzo fell down to the ground after sustaining a gunshot wound.
The other victims managed to get away and the suspects fled the scene in the Toyota.
Lentegeur police registered a case of murder, attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Anti-gang unit detectives were activated and attended to the crime scene and numerous statements were obtained from witnesses.
Thorough investigation by the investigating officer detective Sgt Bradley Schuurman who identified two possible suspects led to the arrests of Parker and Dane Landers (34), who later died due to gang violence while on bail.
Parker was sentenced as follows:
- Count 1, murder: guilty, life imprisonment;
- Count 2, attempted murder: guilty, five years imprisonment;
- Count 3, attempted murder: guilty, five years imprisonment;
- Count 4, possession of firearm: guilty, five years imprisonment;
- Count 5, possession of ammunition: guilty three years imprisonment;
Sentence 2-5 will run concurrently with the sentence imposed on count 1.
