A 29-year-old man from Leonsdale spent the night behind bars after he was caught with an unlicensed firearm on Monday (24 April). 

Elsies River police spokesperson, Captain Daphne O’Reilly says at about 14:30, police were conducting crime prevention patrols when they spotted the man running along Francie van Zijl Drive with a firearm. 

She explains the area has become a hotspot for robberies. Once spotted, officers gave chase and caught the man. 

“They managed to arrest the suspect and found a silver Vector 9mm pistol and 12 9mm rounds in his possession. The 29-year-old suspect from Leonsdale was arrested and taken into custody. The firearm belongs to someone in Gauteng, but was not reported as stolen.”
