A Grade 9 learner at Forest Heights High School, Keagan Overmeyer (15), was shot and killed while attending the drag races at the Shoprite parking lot in Eerste River on Sunday 18 June.
According to Kleinvlei police spokesperson, Captain Florina Muller, the unknown gunmen were among the people watching the drag races.
“They started shooting at the spectators, fatally wounding Overmeyer and injuring six others,” says Muller.
As can be seen in videos of the incident doing the rounds on WhatsApp, the parking lot, which is referred to as the “pitch”, was filled with people watching the races when the gun shots can be heard going off.
Forest Heights High School’s principal Ivan Kroneberg, describes the loss of Overmeyer as a very sad moment for the school.
“Keagan was a bright learner and a talented soccer player,” says Kroneberg.
The memorial service will be held tomorrow (Thursday 22 June) at 09:00 and the funeral on Saturday 24 June at 09:00 at the Forest Heights High School hall.
No arrests have been made yet and the motive for the shooting is being investigated.
