A tragic incident happened at Edgemead Primary School yesterday (Thursday 25 May) when 12–year-old Kyle Grace, a Grade 6 learner fell from the ceiling of the school hall.
According to a statement released by WCED spokesperson, Jessica Shelver, Kyle reportedly accessed a staircase behind the stage and found his way into the ceiling where he fell about eight metres. The school called paramedics, who reportedly declared the learner dead on their arrival.
Bothasig police are investigating the incident. According to the statement the WCED send a team, including counsellors and psychologists, from their district office to the school immediately. Four school counsellors from a neighbouring school joined two district psychologists to provide counselling support.
The incident has traumatised all concerned and the WCED will provide further counselling today (Friday, 26 May), as required.
“This is an unspeakably tragic loss of such a young life. Our heartfelt condolences are with Kyle’s family at this very difficult time,” said Shelver.
Captain Cornelius Franken, acting station commander of Bothasig Police Station, said there was a group of about 35 children who were about to start choir practice in the hall when the incident happened.
Apparently Kyle was at the aftercare which is based next to the hall. “We suspect this was an accident,” Franken said. He also said various police counsellors have also been made available to the school.
