Telephone cables which were cut and stolen in Bishop Lavis resulted in approximately 1400 Telkom customers being affected.
According to a statement by Telkom spokesperson, Gugulethu Maqetuka, Openserve (a division of Telkom) has discovered the cable theft in the Bishop Lavis exchange area, which is having a major effect on the surrounding communities.
The statement says approximately 1 400 customers, which feed through the 11 street distribution cabinets (SDC), are affected by this outage.
“Investigation has revealed that seven copper cables and one optic fibre cable were cut and stolen. Areas affected by this outage are the Airport Industrial area, the Cavalier Centre in Belhar and residential areas Montana and Montevideo.
Openserve would like to ensure the affected communities and businesses that it has prioritised the replacement of these stolen or damaged cables. The theft and damage was reported to the South African Police Service and all relevant call centres are aware of the issue.”
They have made an appeal calling on residents to be vigilant and to report any suspicious acts.
