A Kuils River police officer was among a group of suspects who were arrested in an abalone bust in Parow.
According to a report from provincial police, detectives followed up on information about suspects delivering abalone to a Chinese man on Thursday (2 January).
Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, says the men were making the delivery in a parking lot in Welgemoed.
“Numerous bags of abalone were found inside the boot of a private vehicle that belongs to the police official. The garage of the residence of the suspect was searched in Parow and more abalone was confiscated. A total of 2 428 units of abalone were confiscated worth an estimated street value of R350 000.”
He says four suspects aged between 32 and 40 years, including a police constable from Kuils River Police Station, were arrested. The men will appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
“We are satisfied with the outcome of our intervention today and we will continue to fight crime, and arrest our own members who consider themselves above the law.”
