Three youth teams from Kuils River-based Newman’s Football Club proudly participated in the prestigious Kapstadt Cup over the past weekend (11 October), with impressive performances across the board.
The u-10 side reached the plate final in their division, while the u-12s made it to the quarterfinals of the cup section before bowing out to Action International Academy from Durban.
Quarterfinals
The under-16 team advanced through a challenging group stage, eliminating Stellenbosch FC and Sporting Klub Windhoek of Namibia.
Their efforts earned them a place in the quarterfinals – played at the iconic Athlone Stadium – where they faced off against Tuks (Pretoria University).
After a tense 0-0 draw in regulation time, the match was decided on penalties, with Newman’s narrowly edged out 5-4.
Despite the heartbreak, club founder and manager Nathan Newman was full of pride.
“The u-16 team did extremely well,” he said.
“It’s a remarkable story. In just three years, we’ve taken local boys, many of whom only started playing football with us, to Athlone Stadium and to compete at that level.”
Goosebumps
Newman’s FC draws players from Delft, Wesbank, Mfuleni and Kalkfontein — areas not often in the sporting spotlight.
Reflecting on the club’s journey, Newman said: “Seven years ago, it started with a ball, a deserted tennis court, and a few kids who just wanted to play football.
“Today, we walked out for a cup quarterfinal at Athlone Stadium. From humble beginnings to moments that give you goosebumps.
“Your circumstances do not define who you aspire to be. Be great!”
