Four officers, two men and two women, from Kraaifontein
Police Station escaped death when the police van they were travelling in was
crushed under the weight of a shipping container on Monday morning, 2 October.
Four police vehicles were travelling alongside the container
truck on the N2 between Jan Smuts Drive and Raapenburg Road when the accident
occurred just before 11:00.
They were en route to the police shooting range in Cape
Town, according to a reliable TygerBurger source.
The Kraaifontein police van was flattened and the other
three vehicles severely damaged.
Emergency officials who were dispatched to the scene
transported the victims to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
According to the source three of the Kraaifontein officers,
although very traumatised, sustained light injuries and were released from
hospital on Monday evening.
The other female officer, who sat in the front passenger
seat, is said to be fully conscious and in a stable condition at Vincent
Pallotti hospital. She suffered the worst of the impact.
Apart from an eye injury and a cut on her face, TygerBurger
could not confirm the full extent of her injuries.
The source said the truck was apparently travelling at some
speed around a bend in the left-hand lane when it overturned and the container
fell off.
According to police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi, Mowbray
police registered a case of reckless and negligent driving for further
investigation.
“Please note the circumstances surrounding the incident are
still under investigation,” he said. “However, we can confirm that nine victims
sustained injuries earlier today. We appeal to anyone who witnessed the
incident to please call Crime Stop at 08600 10111.”
