City officials clamped down on the plague of illegal pesticides in the Bellville area on this morning (23 May).

Thousands of items were seized during the raid down Durban Road, including 1538 sachets of rodenticide, 1187 sticks of magic insecticide chalk, 1153 units of cockroach killing bait and 1150 sachets of green leaf killing bait.

City of Cape Town staff were assisted by police, the City’s Law Enforcement Department and the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

“The sale of these items is an ongoing problem, but is particularly prevalent during the warm summer months. Given the unseasonable weather we’re experiencing currently, the demand for illegal pesticides continues to be high,” Mayco member for Area Central, Siyabulela Mamkeli, said.

The Department of Agriculture will take action against the shop owners found to be selling the pesticides, he added.
