A car that was hijacked in Mitchell’s Plain in January was recently recovered in Kuils River thanks to an informant and an off-duty officer. A 21-year old suspect was arrested for possession of a presumed stolen vehicle.

Local police spokesperson WO Liesel Beukes said Sgt Milaan Sarels from Kuils River police received information from an informant that there was a hijacked car parked at Highbury Court in Frost Street, Gersham on Wednesday 19 June around 18:40. Sarels then informed City’s law enforcement and neighbourhood watch members and went to the scene to check.

“According to the informant, a suspect was sitting inside the vehicle.” Beukes said as the officers approached the car a man got out and started running. He was chased down and caught.

“The vehicle was fitted with false number plates and sought on a Mitchell’s Plain case in January.”

The 21-year-old man was detained. Beukes said he appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court on Friday 21 June.

Station Commander Col Jayce Naidoo commended the officers for their dedication and encouraged the community to keep assisting the police.
