A high speed chase followed by a foot pursuit through an informal settlement on in the early hours of Saturday morning saw the arrest of three men attempting to steel a car in Brackenfell.

The suspect black Opel Corsa Lite was first sighted at about 01:30 parked across the road from the Engen service station on Bottelary Road.

The car with tinted windows and been standing there for a while which prompted the service station – that had been robbed several times in the recent past – to sent a distress call to the SJC control room.

“Armed response officers arrived minutes later and approached the vehicle with three men inside. They sped off upon realizing they had been identified. One of them has previously been arrested,“ says SJC Security’s Charl Du Toit.

The control room was notified of the situation and a high-speed chase to the R300 ensued, with the SJC tactical reaction team and Kraaifontein police joining in the pursuit.

The suspects was chased down the R300, the N1 and then into Wallacedene where they abandoned the car and split up as they ran in between the shacks.

Tactical unit officers pursued two suspects while police chased down the other one. All three suspects were apprehended and arrested.

Du Toit says that further investigation by police revealed that the men had attempted to steal a vehicle in Plettenberg Street in Protea Heights, an area that is now being targeted for car theft.

“Car theft is on the rise in Protea Heights with incidents reported on a weekly basis. Two cars were stolen on one night last week, and another the previous week,” says Du Toit.
