An organisation from Eerste River wants to help children that cannot get into Grade R.
The non-profit organisation High Hopes is focused on getting the children into schools to prevent them from falling by the wayside.
Claudine Fredericks, chair of the organisation, says children not getting into schools, is a huge problem in the community.
“For a variety of reasons children are not getting into school. This is a huge problem because children should start as early as possible. Currently we are trying to raise funds for a project for children who have been robbed from quality early childhood development education due to circumstances,” says Fredericks.
According to Fredericks, their aim is to get as many children as possible enrolled.
“Children between the ages four or turning five, six or seven and who are without supervision or are on the streets during the day. We want to provide them with a meal and schooling in Grade R, preparing them for primary school,”she says.
Laying foundations
“Researchers have found that Grade R gives kids in affluent schools some advantage. Preschool and Grade R lays an important foundation for children’s education,” says Fredericks.
Currently they are enrolling 40 children for Grade R classes.
“We have classroom space at two local crèches in Eerste River. One Grade R class in Eerste River at a crèche in Forest Heights and Grade R in Forest Glade. We have two highly qualified principals running the Grade R classes.
“In cases where one parent is working with a low income we can see to accommodate that child for a minimum amount of R300 per month, but intake is limited. Really poor children where parents are not working will get advantage and pay no school fees,” says Fredricks.
