A traffic officer in Bellville was served a fishy surprise
when trying to help a driver in need.

On Thursday morning at around 09:00 a golden Nissan bakkie
broke down in Strand Street, Bellville, police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel
Fienie Nimb explains.

“He was approached by an on-duty traffic officer and
assisted to push his vehicle out of the road, as it was blocking the traffic.”

Upon seeing the officer, the driver promptly fled, leaving
the baffled officer and his car behind.

The police were called in to help search the car.

“When the vehicle was searched, they found 10 blue plastic
bags with undersized abalone in. More than 1000 abalone were counted,” Nimb
says.

The vehicle was impounded and the abalone seized. A case of
unlawful possession of abalone will be investigated, Nimb says.
