A Belhar resident was arrested by the Hawks after R5.3 million in cash as well as several ID documents were seized at his home over the weekend.

The 33-year-old man was being investigated by the Hawks in conjunction with the provincial department of transport on allegations of money laundering, corruption and racketeering.

Captain Lloyd Ramovha, a provincial police spokesperson, says the suspect who was allegedly running an illicit licensing and police clearance operation, was arrested by the unit’s anti-corruption officers at his home in Belhar on Sunday 13 November.

“Almost R5.3 million in cash, several ID documents as well as two vehicles were seized during the search and seizure operation,” Ramovha says.

Provincial acting head of the Hawks, Brigadier Mzwandile Ndlovu, praised the officers for the arrest.

“This is undoubtedly a telling blow to the underworld; we remain unequivocal in the fight against organised crime as it ranks very high in our mandate,” he says.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (Tuesday 15 November).

Ramovha says investigations continue and possibilities of more arrests cannot be ruled out.
