  • Their work aims to restore the lush greenery and prepare for the rejuvenating effects of anticipated winter rains, promising a vibrant landscape for residents and visitors alike.

The Eden on the Bay lawn, the centre piece of Big Bay, bore the brunt of the dry, festive season, enduring extreme temperatures and the constant trampling of thousands of feet.

Despite this, the Big Bay Master Property Owners Association’s (BBMPOA) landscaping team, under the expert guidance of Justin Wessels, has accomplished a remarkable feat in nurturing and rejuvenating this treasured green space.

Their efforts have breathed new life into the lawn, and with the anticipated winter rains set to wash away chemical residues, further revitalisation is on the horizon.

Beyond the lawn, said the BBMPOA, Wessels and his team have diligently worked on the pavements, traffic islands and circles, planting seeds, seedlings and off-cuts to ensure a lush, vibrant landscape in the months to come.

“It has been a long, dry summer and our West Coast Strandveld has taken a beating! But ‘winter is coming’ and, hopefully, with plenty of rainfall that will bring life and colour back to our streets and gardens”

Challenges

The BBMPOA previously said it was difficult for its landscaping and maintenance team to do meaningful work on the lawn over the festive season due to the large number of people in the area at the time who had unlimited access.

“We have also faced certain challenges, including pump failure, a large amount of foot traffic (occasionally vehicles too), structures and umbrellas being erected, grass being pulled up along with the irrigation, holes dug, ashtrays and rocks moved onto the lawn area, outright vandalism.

“Also, many instances of the irrigation system being tampered with, hundreds of cigarette butts discarded on the grass and just a general disregard for the rules of the lawn area.”

The public can now enjoy the restored green patch, thanks to the relentless efforts of the BBMPOA landscaping team.
