Provincial minister of education David Maynier said the Western Cape class of 2023 had increased the matric pass rate again to 81,54%, despite facing an exceptionally challenging year, and now having more than 50 000 successful candidates.

Fairbairn College took the lead for the high schools in Goodwood with a 97,3% matric pass rate, then Goodwood College with a pass rate of 95,6%.

The headmistress of Goodwood College, Alicia Newman, said the learners had made the school proud.

“I am ecstatic and extremely proud of our matric class of 2023,” she said. “They had proven that despite the many challenges that we faced in 2023; we could still reach academic success.”

Newman added that this could only have been possible with the support, commitment and dedication of their full staff complement, parents and learners.

This school’s top students are Tameeqa Martin 75%, Taygen Simons 70,1% and Alana van der Poll 70,1%

Goodwood College obtained a Bachelor’s pass rate of 38%, a Diploma pass rate of 40,1% and Higher Certificate pass of 17,5%

With three distinctions in Afrikaans FAL, four distinctions in business studies and one in mathematics literacy

President High School

President High School has a matric pass rate of 94,6%, of which 87% of their Grade 12 learners can study further at tertiary institutions.

According to Erna Joubert, principal of President High, this school strives for excellence.

Although they are satisfied with the results and very proud of the class of 2023, “we know a 100% pass rate is not out of our reach,” she said.

Their top three students are Siddeeq Parker, the deputy head boy of 2023, he passed with seven distinctions in English HL, Afrikaans FAL, life orientation, mathematics (91%), physical sciences, life sciences and accounting

Jayden Musset, the head boy 2023, in second place, passed with four distinctions in English FAL, life orientation, accounting and life sciences

Thirdly, Imrah Swarts, the deputy head girl 2023 passed with two distinctions in Afrikaans FAL and business studies

President High School obtained 39 subject distinctions, the highest subject result for Putela Lokakao, in business studies (94%)

The school also boasts with four Subject As: Lutesha dos Santos (Afrikaans FAL, life orientation, business studies, and tourism. Despite the challenges at JG Meiring High School, the school had a matric pass rate of 89,9%.
