Filia School in Goodwood will be having a concert, focusing on their learners’ abilities instead of their disabilities.

Filia School was established in 1980 as a school for learners with cerebral palsy by the Western Cape Cerebral Palsy Association. Filia School now functions as an inclusive public special school and resource centre for learners with severe intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder.

“We currently service the educational and developmental needs of 242 learners with the highest support needs in the Metro North education district,” says Filia School principal Mandy Saayman.

Saayman says their annual concert is the highlight of the year with all the learners showcasing what they have learnt through their unique talents and skills on stage.

“The concert takes place on 27 and 28 October and this year our theme is ‘Dancing in the Dark’. We are collaborating with The Unmute Dance Company who volunteer their time and amazing skills to ensure that our learners shine on stage.”

Saayman expresses that at Filia School the staff focus on the learner’s ability and see children who love to learn through their experiences. The concert is a means for learners to express themselves and to show their amazing personalities through their confidence and willingness to share a positive message through the concert storyline.

The concert storyline is written by the school’s Concert Co-ordinator, Hanli Geel (a teacher) together with their talented and passionate staff who always want to see their learners shine.

Tickets cost R50 and can be purchased at the door or call the school at 021 592 1361 to pre-book tickets. The concert will start at 10:00 on 27 and 28 October at Filia School.
