The crime statistics for the first quarter of 2023/24 were released earlier this month.

Police minister Bheki Cele released the quarterly crime statistics (third quarter, October 2023 to December 2023) on Friday 14 February.

The statistics reveal that Goodwood police are still struggling to improve the number of crimes detected as a result of police action.

Within the crime stats Goodwood police have seen an increase of assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, which went from 13 cases reported in the October 2022 to December 2022 time frame to 27 in the same time frame a year later.

Common robbery went from 73 counts last year to 91 counts this year, 18 counts higher.

Robbery with aggravating circumstances also saw an increase of 24,2%.

According to the statistics, the number of rape cases reported also saw an increase of five more such cases reported in the October 2023 to December 2023 time period.

Two cases of arson were also reported a Goodwood police, the last time an arson case was reported was in 2021.

Malicious damage to property saw a 25% increase from 40 cases reported in 2022 to 50 in 2023.

Theft out of or from a motor vehicle went from 93 such cases to 125 in 2023.

Other serious crimes such as commercial crime saw an increase of 26,7% and shoplifting saw an increase of 17,9%.

However, there was some positive feedback from the statistics. Property-related crimes such as burglary at residential premises saw a decrease of 26,8% and theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles also reported 3 counts less than in the 2022 time frame; the same goes for burglary at non-residential premises.

Common assault cases also ended with 2,2% less in the October 2023 till December 2023 quarterly statistics.
