As the festive season approaches, the public are once again reminded to remain vigilant and take extra precautions to ensure that their homes, businesses and loved ones stay safe during the holidays.

The Goodwood Community Policing Forum (CPF) shared some tips to help make sure people are informed.

This time of the year often brings increased movement, shopping activity, and travel and with it, a rise in opportunistic crime, the organisation said.

The CPF is calling on all to play their part in safeguarding themselves and their neighbours. “The CPF would like everyone to enjoy a safe and peaceful holiday season. Simple safety measures, from checking alarms to staying alert while shopping, can make a big difference,” said Abdallah Sydney, chair.

Around the house

Residents leaving town or spending time away from home are encouraged to follow these simple steps:

  • Ensure all doors, windows, and gates are properly secured;
  • Test alarm systems and notify your security provider of your holiday plans;
  • Avoid advertising travel plans on social media;
  • Ask a trusted neighbour or friend to collect mail and keep an eye on the property;
  • Use light timers to give the appearance that someone is home, and
  • Keep valuables out of sight from windows and sliding doors.

Businesses

For businesses there are also ways to remain safe. Local business owners are urged to follow these steps:

  • Bank cash regularly and avoid keeping large sums overnight;
  • Double-check CCTV and alarm systems;
  • Secure keys, documents, and high-value stock;
  • Ensure exterior lighting and visibility around premises are maintained;
  • Brief staff on closing procedures and emergency contacts, and
  • Work together with neighbouring shops and business to report suspicious activity.

By looking out for one another and reporting suspicious activity, we can help keep crime at bay

Out shopping

The public are also reminded to be vigilant when going out to do their festive shopping. With shopping centres and public areas becoming busier, residents are encouraged to follow these steps:

  • Stay alert in parking areas and avoid distractions like cellphone use;
  • Keep handbags closed and personal belongings secure;
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and rather use cards or digital payments;
  • Supervise children closely in crowded spaces, and
  • Report any suspicious individuals or behaviour to mall security or the police immediately.

Travelling

When travelling, the public are also reminded to be careful. Those travelling during the festive season are encouraged to follow these safety tips:

  • Check vehicles before long trips (tyres brakes, lights and oil);
  • Rest adequately before driving and take regular breaks;
  • Refrain from using cellphones while driving, and
  • Never drink and drive, arrange alternative transport if needed.

The CPF also urges the public to be vigilant around their community. Goodwood, the CPF said, has a strong sense of community. “By looking out for one another and reporting suspicious activity, we can help keep crime at bay,” said Sydney.

In case of an emergency the public can call the Goodwood police on 021 592 4430, the City of Cape Town’s emergency line on 107 (from a landline) or 021 480 7700 (from a cellphone) or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
